Suzanne Le, BBA 2006
|
Summer Intern, Kimberly-Clark Corporation
Looking to get out of Houston and explore Austin and UT, Suzanne optimistically walked into McCombs, but was unsure what major was right for her. At a friend’s recommendation, she signed on with the MIS team despite her lack of a highly technical background. “I’ve always been interested in computers and I dabbled in html when I was younger, designing web pages—but I never took it seriously.” Even with minimal programming experience, Suzanne has enjoyed the MIS curriculum.
Suzanne attributes her success to the passionate MIS professors and administrators. She recalls MIS 333K: Computer System Utilization in Business with Professor Byars as being her favorite class, “he has a great personality and made the class a lot more enjoyable, even with the notorious ‘K Project’ at the end.” Her two favorite professors are Professor Byars and Professor Bailey, “it’s a toss up—they’re both wonderful and really care about their classes, students, and the program.” Suzanne praises the MIS program for its versatility and abundant opportunities, “you don’t have to stick to coding or developing, there’s so much on the business side as well.”
After learning about Kimberly-Clark and meeting some employees at an MISA company night, Suzanne gave the company her résumé at the fall Career Fair. Kimberly-Clark took her on and Suzanne spent her summer on the Global Learning Solutions (GLS) team, which dealt with internal employee training—offsite, onsite and online. Suzanne’s main project was working with a group of interns to develop a marketing program that revamped the GLS team’s image within the company. She ended up redesigning one of the internal websites, creating a flash piece, and running an open house towards the end of the internship.
If Suzanne were hiring interns for Kimberly-Clark’s GLS team, she would seek out candidates who were detail-oriented, creative, and dedicated. Her advice to current students would be to (1) get to know your teams since “it will be more fun that way,” (2) get involved and don’t limit yourself to what you’re used to, and (3) ask questions!
Suzanne plans to work in industry after graduation and continue to gain the experience and skills necessary to exceed her job expectations and be acknowledged for it. With interests in interior and graphic design, Suzanne hopes to find a career that can involve those two passions in her daily tasks. She plans to marry her high school sweetheart, have 2.5 children and living in a 4/2.5 house somewhere in Texas. “It’s a typical American dream, right?” Outside of class, Suzanne was involved with MISA and served as president. Her hobbies include drawing, spending time with friends and family, watching TV and traveling.
