What work brought you to your job today?

I've always enjoyed the challenges of analyzing a difficult problem and finding a solution. I need to be busy - I get bored easily! At my current job, you never know what's going to happen when you walk in to work in the morning. We're a small company, so it's common to be assigned a project for a technology you've never seen before and have to learn it quickly. I really enjoy the fast pace and high expectations. Because we're small, I get to run my projects from pre-sales to the project closure meeting. I like the close relationship with my clients.

What do you do in your current job?

I am a consultant for everything Microsoft. I work for a consulting company in downtown Austin that works primarily with credit unions and small banks. Projects I might be working on include backup solutions, Microsoft Exchange, Active Directory, Microsoft SQL migrations and implementations, and disaster recovery planning. In addition I also architect and design complete IT infrastructures for new clients. Helping credit unions with the IT portion of audits and compliance regulations is another big aspect of my position.

What do you value from your MIS education?

The teamwork and soft skills I learned as an MIS student have been invaluable. However, the most important thing I learned was to see the "big picture" - how IT fits into the complete business plan and goals of an organization. Being able to think this way allows you to approach IT from the perspective of an executive and make a strong business case for the technologies you want to implement.

What is your advice for current students?

Find something you're interested in and try to get as much experience in it as possible before you graduate. Not only will you stand out in interviews, but you're more likely to find a job you want to stick with on the first try.
