What work brought you to your job today?
My experience in nonprofit management, barbecue, and fundraising led to my current involvement with the CHIEFS. But how did I get from MIS to nonprofit management? My efforts in founding the Byars/Jordan Endowment for MIS (during my 11 years as a management consultant) opened my eyes to the fact that I have the power to choose where my professional time, talent, and services are directed. Working in the nonprofit world allowed me to select a cause that I could support with both my head and my heart. What do you do in your current job?
As a founding board member of a start-up grassroots organization, I am required to wear many hats. Of course I support organizational needs using technology, but much more... We are designing our outreach programs, and beginning to pull together our brand identity. We are navigating incorporation and fundraising in a declining economy. We are defining roles, designing business process, and laying the foundation for future members and boards. What do you value from your MIS education?
The UT MIS program teaches active participation and continuous learning. It is a program for people that are ready to get their hands dirty doing things that drive change and effect results. The focus on problem-solving in a team-oriented, trial-by-fire environment generally separates the wheat from the chaff prior to graduation. The holistic approach to work ethic, time management, and work/life balance are easier to appreciate after graduation. What is your advice for current students?
Like what you do. Work hard. Learn everything you can. Have fun!
